Get Your Big “But” Out of Your Way!

I Would Love to, But…big butt

It is amazing how certain words we say can make the difference between accomplishing something and not getting something done. The vocabulary we use in public or in the privacy of our own mind does determine the outcome of our intentions whether we want them to or not. The word “but” is commonly used by many people and did you know, when you use the word “but” you negate everything that is said before it?

Here are a couple of examples:

  •  I would like to go running today but it is cold out. What you are really saying is ” I won’t go running today because it is cold out.”
  • I would love to quit my job and start my own business but it is a lot of work. In this statement what you are really telling yourself is even though starting your own business is appealing to you, it is just too much work.

  Quit Resting on Your Buts

Let’s rewrite the above statements and replace the word “but” with the word “and.” As you say these statements out loud notice how different they feel just by replacing that one word.

  • I would like to go running and it is cold out. In this sentence you are stating your intention to run and you are also acknowledging the fact it is cold outside so you will probably dress accordingly.
  • I would love to quit my job and start my own business and it is a lot of work. In this statement what you are telling yourself is that you want to start your own business and you are committed to doing the work necessary to see it through.

I Am Committed to Change And…

We are constantly programming ourselves for success or failure with the words we use in our lives. Be conscious of the words you use and eliminate from your vocabulary any negative words or words that take away your power. If  these negative programming words have been part of your everyday speech, it will take practice along time to change that habit and I know you are committed to to a better more prosperous life so you will do the work necessary for that change.

Loved this article! I have a “But” friend. Whenever I say I have an idea and tell her about it… she is always… always… quick to say but maybe it won’t work because of this, or but because of that. Drives me up a wall. The “But” I don’t have enough money to start a business put a hold on my dreams for at least 10 years. Now that I’m living it, I can see that had I started 10 years ago without my “but” getting in the way, I would have been a millionaire by now. – http://plusologie.com/

    Hi Karol,

Thank you for your great comments and you know, many of us who have fallen into the same trap. “I would love to start a new business but ….”, and that stops us in our tracks immediately. Just look at how differently things turn out when you say, “I would like to start a business, I know it requires a significant investment and I am committed to finding the resources to make my dream a reality.
Even though you feel like you started ten years too late, acknowledge the fact that you had the courage to finally break through the barriers which were holding you back. Many people never take that step.
