Why is Journaling Important?
Journaling is a way for an individual to track progress in their life whether it be of business, spiritual or
personal in nature. Keeping a journal is a powerful way to help us reflect, prioritize and make sense of our lives. Studies show that people who keep journals are more likely to let go of personal limitations and see their dreams fulfilled than those who do not. Journaling allows a person to express their dreams, visions and thoughts freely and honestly. Journaling also lets a person examine their setbacks and challenges and can encourage them to face their fears to live a happier, more fulfilling life.
Keeping a journal is just like anything else in life, it requires practice to become a habit. Here are some key points that will get you started with successful journaling.
Here Are Your 5 Key Steps to Effective Journaling.
- Buy yourself a journal that is comfortable to write in. This is important! If your writing experience isn’t pleasant, you will likely stop before too long. In one of my journals it is difficult to write in the last few lines of each page so I just don’t. Also, just like a vision board inspires a person with pictures and inspirational quotes, the same can be done with a journal to inspire creativity.
- Take notes throughout the day. Keep a small notebook or voice recorder with you to record thoughts, inspirations and revelations as they occur in your day. Then at the end of your day you can reflect on these thoughts or insights in your journal. Doing this will will insure that you remember all the significant moments of your day. Many important details are forgotten by days end without doing this step.
- Set a specific time each day for your writing. Setting a specific time each day will do a couple things for you.First, to develop a habit you must have a set routine and putting aside a specific time of each day helps you establish that routine. Second, once you begin to get comfortable with this routine, your mind will begin to automatically switch to the creative and reflective mode when writing in your journal.
- Read yesterday’s entry. This allows you to take an honest look at goals you might have set for yourself and to determine whether or not you are staying on track to see them fulfilled. It also lets you to see if your feelings and insights have changed in certain parts of your life.
- Be honest! Remember, this journal is for your eyes only so be honest about your dreams, goals, fears and worries. Write about what is going on today, what did you accomplish, what could you improve upon and what do you want for your tomorrow. Being positive and not judgemental of yourself will allow you to grow. Being negative will only increase the mental blocks to your creativity and insightfulness. Making your journaling a positive experience will increase your desire to continue.
