Let’s face it, many of us live very busy lives so our days are filled with various activities and some of which can be stressful. We cannot always control what happens in the middle of our days, though we can control what happens when our day begins and how it ends. Having a set daily routine or “power routine” as I like to call it, helps us make sure we start our day off right and finish it right, no matter what chaos transpires in the middle. My personal, daily routine has been crucial in my personal development growth and is one of the subjects in my upcoming book, “From Stinking To Thinking.” Without a strong routine or system in your day, it is easy for your day to just slip away from you, leaving you no closer to your goals.

The following is an example of my morning and evening routines:

Wake up at 4:30am

Put on a pot of coffee and spend 15 minutes giving thanks for all that has and is coming to me. This is my favorite time of day because everything is quiet and still and it is just me and my thoughts.

I spend about 5 minutes planning my day and writing down the three things I plan to accomplish on that day.

I read a book on motivation, personal development or inspiration for 30-45 minutes.

I exercise for 45 – 60 minutes.

I usually have all the above done by 7 am and I’m ready to take on the day. My brain has been activated properly with positive, powerful thoughts and I have plenty of oxygen flowing through my body. I have to admit that because I do wake up quite early and sometimes I hit a low around 2 pm so what I do is take a 20 min. power nap ( no longer) and then I am ready to rock and roll to the end of the day and this is how I wind it down.

Read again for about 30 minutes (another inspirational, personal development book of course). This morning and evening routine of reading of just 30-45 minutes at a time, allows me to read two books a month.

Reflect on the activities of the day and assess what went well and where I could improve. Read my article on effective journaling.

This is the time of the day when Laurie and I might turn the TV on and watch one of the shows we enjoy. Our TV never gets turned on until late evening.

The evening routine is just as important as the morning because you want to take the time to wind things down properly before going to sleep. While asleep your subconscious mind keeps working and will digest the last things you feed it and that is why it is important to fill it with positive and powerful thoughts.

What Happens If The Daily Routine Is Broken?

I’m bringing this point up because it has happened to me before and it just happened again today. Sometimes life just happens and our plans get thrown off. Today there was a task that needed to be completed early in the morning so I was not able to get my workout in. What happened was my day felt out of sorts, like things were just not fitting in. So what did I do? I decided to get a little mini workout in to get me back on track and it worked just beautifully. I went on with the rest of my day with the focus and energy of a typical day. What I found was when you have a good routine, it is a system for how your whole day operates. You disrupt your system, you disrupt your day. Many times all it takes is just a minor adjustment to get you back on track to move on with your day effectively.

Let’s face it we all have good intentions and many of them fail when we don’t design a system of implementation for them. A system or a routine allows you to get into a certain rhythm in your day and once this turns into a habit you will find yourself achieving all that you intend to. People who establish a daily routine based on solid good habits will be much more successful in their life than those who do not.

Why is Journaling Important?

Journaling is a way for an individual to track progress in their life whether it be of business, spiritual or personal in nature. Keeping a journal is a powerful way to help us reflect, prioritize and make sense of our lives. Studies show that people who keep journals are more likely to let go of personal limitations and see their dreams fulfilled than those who do not. Journaling allows a person to express their dreams, visions and thoughts freely and honestly. Journaling also lets a person examine their setbacks and challenges and can encourage them to face their fears to live a happier, more fulfilling life.

Keeping a journal is just like anything else in life, it requires practice to become a habit. Here are some key points that will get you started with successful journaling.

Here Are Your 5 Key Steps to Effective Journaling.

Buy yourself a journal that is comfortable to write in. This is important! If your writing experience isn’t pleasant, you will likely stop before too long. In one of my journals it is difficult to write in the last few lines of each page so I just don’t. Also, just like a vision board inspires a person with pictures and inspirational quotes, the same can be done with a journal to inspire creativity.

Take notes throughout the day. Keep a small notebook or voice recorder with you to record thoughts, inspirations and revelations as they occur in your day. Then at the end of your day you can reflect on these thoughts or insights in your journal. Doing this will will insure that you remember all the significant moments of your day. Many important details are forgotten by days end without doing this step.

Set a specific time each day for your writing. Setting a specific time each day will do a couple things for you.First, to develop a habit you must have a set routine and putting aside a specific time of each day helps you establish that routine. Second, once you begin to get comfortable with this routine, your mind will begin to automatically switch to the creative and reflective mode when writing in your journal.

Read yesterday’s entry. This allows you to take an honest look at goals you might have set for yourself and to determine whether or not you are staying on track to see them fulfilled. It also lets you to see if your feelings and insights have changed in certain parts of your life.

Be honest! Remember, this journal is for your eyes only so be honest about your dreams, goals, fears and worries. Write about what is going on today, what did you accomplish, what could you improve upon and what do you want for your tomorrow. Being positive and not judgemental of yourself will allow you to grow. Being negative will only increase the mental blocks to your creativity and insightfulness. Making your journaling a positive experience will increase your desire to continue.

 Start Writing Now!

So, if you want to be more productive in both your personal and professional life and you want to challenge yourself in thinking more deeply and creatively, do what many successful people are doing. Start journaling. A life worth living is a life worth recording.
